What are the general admissions requirements for the University of Chicago?

UChicago does not have a fixed checklist of minimum stats that guarantees admission, but the core requirements are clear. Applicants submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, the UChicago Supplement, a high school transcript, counselor and teacher recommendations, and a school report. UChicago is also test-optional, so SAT or ACT scores are not required, though students can submit them if they strengthen the application.

Academically, UChicago looks for a very rigorous high school program and strong grades across demanding courses. That usually means advanced classes when available, especially in the main academic subjects such as English, math, science, social science, and foreign language. There is no published required GPA or required number of APs, but successful applicants are typically among the strongest students in their schools.

The written portion matters a lot at UChicago. In addition to the main personal essay, applicants complete UChicago-specific supplemental essays, including its well-known extended essay prompt. Those responses are important because they help show intellectual curiosity, creativity, and fit with UChicago’s academic culture.

You should also expect to submit recommendation letters, usually from teachers who can speak to your classroom performance and thinking skills. UChicago may consider extracurricular involvement, honors, research, work, service, or other commitments, but it is usually less about having a huge activity list and more about depth, engagement, and authentic academic or personal interests.
