I’m working on my UChicago essay and I’m at the point where the ideas are there, but the draft still feels rough and too close to my first attempt.

Revision should push you toward sharper details, weirder but purposeful observations, and phrasing that sounds like how you naturally think when you are excited about something.

A useful test is to underline every sentence that could appear in any strong college essay, then cut or rewrite those lines. Replace abstract claims like “I’ve always been curious” with evidence of your mind at work: an odd question you got stuck on, a pattern you noticed, a small obsession you followed further than anyone expected.

Also check the structure. Even a surreal or funny essay needs momentum. Each paragraph should either complicate the idea, deepen the insight, or reveal something new about you.
