Should I apply early to the University of Chicago if I’m not sure it’s my top choice?

I’m trying to decide whether applying early to UChicago would actually help me, but I’m not fully certain it’s the school I want most. I know early applications can sometimes improve chances, but I also don’t want to commit too soon if that matters.

I’m a junior thinking ahead to application season and want to understand how to make the decision in a smart way.

If you are not sure UChicago is your top choice, do not apply through a binding early plan. UChicago offers both Early Decision I and Early Decision II, and those are binding, which means you are expected to enroll if admitted. It also offers Early Action, which is non-binding, so that is the better early option if you want an admissions boost from applying early without locking yourself in.

So the smart rule is pretty simple. Apply ED only if you would absolutely attend UChicago over your other realistic options and you are comfortable not comparing financial aid packages beyond what the school provides. If you like UChicago a lot but are still unsure whether it beats your other favorites, Early Action makes much more sense.

As a junior, the best way to decide is to separate two questions: Do I want an early read from UChicago, and am I ready to commit? If the answer to the first is yes and the second is no, EA is the cleanest choice. If by fall of senior year UChicago clearly becomes your first choice, then ED can be worth considering.
