What should I include in the UConn essay for nursing applicants?

I’m applying to UConn as a nursing major and want to make sure my essay is focused on the right things. I know the essay is supposed to show more than just grades, but I’m not sure what experiences or qualities matter most for nursing specifically.

I want to write something that feels genuine and makes sense for a nursing applicant without sounding too generic.

For UConn nursing, your essay should show why nursing fits you through specific experiences, not just that you are compassionate or “want to help people.” The strongest topics usually reveal qualities UConn’s School of Nursing values in future nurses: empathy, communication, resilience, judgment, teamwork, and a real understanding of patient care. A focused essay about one or two concrete moments will usually work better than a broad life story about always wanting to be a nurse.

Good material can come from volunteering in a hospital or clinic, caring for a family member, working with children or older adults, a health-related class, shadowing, or even a non-medical experience where you learned to stay calm, listen carefully, and take responsibility for others. What matters is not the prestige of the experience but what you noticed, how you responded, and what changed in your understanding of nursing.

Make sure the essay shows that you understand nursing as more than being kind. UConn will want applicants who recognize that nursing involves science, patient advocacy, collaboration, cultural awareness, and composure under pressure. If you write about a meaningful interaction, explain what it taught you about the nurse’s role rather than only describing the situation.

A good structure is: one vivid moment, what you did or observed, what it revealed about you, and how it shaped your interest in nursing. For example, instead of saying you volunteered at a hospital and loved helping people, focus on a single interaction where listening, patience, or quick thinking mattered, then connect that to why nursing specifically appeals to you.

Avoid common generic lines like wanting to give back, loving science and helping people, or having a passion for healthcare unless you back them up with details. Also avoid making the essay mostly about another person’s illness if your own perspective, choices, and growth disappear from the story.

The best UConn nursing essay will sound grounded, reflective, and specific. It should leave the reader with a clear sense of how you think, how you respond to people, and why nursing is the right path for you in particular.
