What should I include in a letter of recommendation request for UConn?

I’m a junior starting to think about my college applications, and I want to ask my teacher for a recommendation in a way that actually helps them write something strong. Since UConn is one of the schools I’m interested in, I’m trying to figure out what information I should give when I make the request.

I want to make sure I include the right details without overwhelming them.

Include the basics your teacher needs to write a strong, specific letter: why you’re asking them, which class you had with them and when, and a short list of the qualities or experiences you hope they can speak to. The best request gives your teacher enough context to remember you clearly without turning your note into a full resume dump.

A strong request should mention your full name, grade, the course you took with them, and one or two specific moments from class, like a project, paper, discussion, or improvement you showed. You should also include your college list or at least mention that UConn is one of your target schools, your intended major if you have one, and what you value about UConn so the teacher understands your direction.

It also helps to attach a short brag sheet or student info sheet. That can include activities, leadership, work or family responsibilities, academic interests, awards, and anything important that happened outside the classroom that affected your growth. Keep it concise, and focus on what they would not automatically know from your transcript.

Make the logistics easy. Include whether the recommendation will be submitted through Common App or another system, and any school-specific instructions your counselor has given you. Give them an easy way to decline if they do not feel they can write a strong letter.

A good email is simple: explain why you chose them, remind them of what they saw in you, attach your info sheet, and thank them for their time.
