What makes a strong UConn admissions essay?
I’m working on my college applications and UConn is one of my top choices. I know the essay is supposed to help show who I am beyond grades and test scores, but I’m not sure what a strong response actually looks like.
I want to understand what qualities make a UConn essay stand out in a good way.

A strong UConn admissions essay feels specific, personal, and grounded in real experiences rather than trying to sound impressive. The best responses show how you think, what matters to you, and how you would fit into a large public research university that values initiative, community, and academic engagement. UConn uses the Common App personal statement, so there is not one “UConn-style” topic, but strong essays usually reveal clear personality, reflection, and direction.
What makes an essay stand out is detail. Instead of saying you are hardworking or passionate, show that through a moment, habit, conversation, setback, or project that only you could describe. A memorable essay often centers on one focused story and then explains why it mattered, what changed in you, or how it shaped your goals.
For UConn, it helps if your essay suggests you would thrive in a collaborative, active campus environment. That does not mean you need to mention UConn constantly in the personal statement, but your values should come through in a way that matches the school’s culture: curiosity, follow-through, contribution, and growth. If you are writing any UConn-specific short responses, then connect those traits to actual programs, communities, or opportunities at UConn.
Strong essays also sound like a real 17- or 18-year-old, not a brochure or a résumé. Clear writing, honest reflection, and a consistent voice matter more than dramatic topics. An ordinary subject can work very well if your perspective is original and concrete.
What usually weakens an essay is being too broad, listing accomplishments without insight, forcing a grand life lesson, or choosing a topic that says a lot about the event but not much about you. The strongest response leaves the reader with a sharp sense of your character and how you will show up on campus.
