What do recommendation letters need to include for Tsinghua University applications?

I'm a high school student looking into applying to Tsinghua University, and I'm trying to understand how recommendation letters are usually handled. I know some schools care a lot about what the recommender says, while others mostly want the letter in a specific format.

I want to know what information or qualities the recommendation letters are expected to cover for this application.

For Tsinghua University, recommendation letters usually need to do two things well: confirm your academic ability and speak to your character, potential, and fit for university-level study. In practice, strong letters describe your performance in class, intellectual curiosity, work ethic, communication skills, and personal qualities such as integrity, maturity, and initiative.

A useful letter usually includes the recommender’s relationship to you, how long they have known you, and in what context, such as teaching you in math, physics, literature, or serving as a counselor or principal. It should then give concrete observations about your academic strengths, classroom engagement, problem-solving ability, research or project work if relevant, and how you compare with peers. If you have leadership, service, competition, or extracurricular strengths, those can be mentioned too, but the academic side generally matters most.

Format matters as well. The letter should be written on school or official letterhead if possible, signed by the recommender, and include their title and contact information.

What usually makes a Tsinghua recommendation effective is specificity. A teacher saying you are “excellent” is much less useful than explaining that you consistently asked advanced questions, led a lab team, produced unusually strong analytical writing, or ranked near the top of a demanding class. That kind of detail helps the admissions office understand both your preparation and your potential.
