Tsinghua asks a “why this school” essay to see whether your interest is informed, specific, and academically grounded, not just general prestige-driven enthusiasm. Admissions readers want evidence that you understand what Tsinghua offers, how its curriculum or research culture fits your goals, and whether you would actually thrive in that environment. In practice, this essay helps them judge fit, seriousness of purpose, and how thoughtfully you have connected your past experiences to what you hope to do at Tsinghua.

That matters because Tsinghua is a highly selective university with a strong emphasis on intellectual preparation, initiative, and contribution. A school-specific essay lets readers distinguish between applicants who simply admire the name and applicants who have looked closely at particular programs, academic structures, labs, interdisciplinary opportunities, or the university’s global and Chinese context. They are often trying to see whether your reasons are concrete enough that, if admitted, you would arrive with direction and make good use of the opportunities there.
