What should I know before applying to Tsinghua University as an international student?
I’m a high school student starting to look at colleges outside the U.S., and Tsinghua University is one of the schools I’m interested in. I know it’s very competitive, but I’m not sure what really matters most in a strong application.
I’m mainly trying to understand the general application process and what kind of profile students usually have when they apply.

Before applying to Tsinghua as an international student, know that it is one of China’s most selective universities and that the biggest factors are your academic record, program fit, language readiness, and whether you meet the specific requirements of the degree track you choose. Tsinghua offers both Chinese-taught and English-taught programs, and the application expectations differ depending on the language of instruction. For undergraduate applicants, the university usually asks for strong secondary school grades, transcripts, passport information, personal statements or study plans, recommendation letters, and proof of language proficiency.
A strong applicant profile is usually academically excellent first. That generally means top grades in a demanding curriculum, especially in subjects tied to your intended major. If you are applying for engineering, computer science, economics, or other highly competitive fields, strong math and science preparation matters a lot.
Language is also a major piece. For Chinese-taught programs, applicants typically need strong HSK results. For English-taught programs, Tsinghua may require TOEFL or IELTS unless your prior schooling was in English, and some programs still value at least some Chinese ability because daily life and many campus interactions in Beijing will be easier with it.
You should also look closely at the exact international admissions category. Tsinghua has separate instructions for international undergraduate applicants, and timelines and required documents can change by year. Some applicants may also be asked to complete interviews, entrance-style assessments, or submit additional materials depending on the program.
In practice, the students who are most competitive usually have more than just high grades. They often show clear direction, such as sustained interest in research, Olympiads, academic competitions, leadership, or projects that connect directly to their intended field.
