What campus resources does UConn offer for freshmen?

I’m a high school senior looking into UConn and trying to understand what support is actually available once you get there. I know big schools can feel overwhelming at first, so I want to know what kinds of freshman resources UConn has for things like academics, advising, tutoring, and adjusting to campus life.

UConn offers a solid set of freshman support resources, especially through First Year Programs, academic advising, the Academic Achievement Center, and residential life programming. New students get help before classes even start through orientation and advising, and once the semester begins there are tutoring, writing support, and transition-focused programs designed to make a large campus feel more manageable. For a big public university, UConn is fairly structured about first-year support rather than leaving students to figure everything out on their own.

For academics, freshmen typically work with advisors connected to their school, college, or the ACES exploratory program if they are still deciding on a path. UConn also has the Academic Achievement Center, which offers peer tutoring, supplemental instruction for some courses, academic coaching, study skills help, and support for time management and learning strategies. The Writing Center is another key resource, especially for first-year writing classes and research papers.

For adjusting to campus life, UConn’s First Year Programs office helps run orientation and transition programming, and first-year students also benefit from residence hall staff such as resident assistants and hall directors. Living on campus usually means frequent floor meetings, community events, and practical support around getting settled socially and academically. That matters at UConn because Storrs is large, and those smaller residential communities often become the first layer of support.

There are also specialized support systems depending on what a student needs. The Center for Students with Disabilities coordinates accommodations, Counseling and Mental Health Services supports student well-being, and Career services helps even first-year students start exploring internships and majors.
