How does the UConn application work for first-generation students?

I’m a first-generation high school senior looking at UConn, and I’m trying to understand whether there are any parts of the application that are different for first-gen students.

I’m filling out college apps on my own for the first time, so I want to know how UConn reviews that background and whether there’s anything I should make sure to include.

UConn does not have a separate application for first-generation students, but first-gen status is part of the context they can consider in a holistic review. If you are the first in your family to attend a four-year college, that background can help admissions understand your opportunities, responsibilities, and the path you took to get to college.

The most important thing is to make sure your first-gen status is actually visible in the application. On the application itself, answer the parent education questions carefully, since that is usually how colleges identify first-generation applicants. If your family situation is more complicated, such as a parent attending college outside the U.S. or not completing a degree, use the additional information section if needed to clarify.

What matters more is whether the rest of your application shows your context clearly, including school involvement, work or family responsibilities, access to advanced courses, and any obstacles you navigated. If being first-gen shaped your goals or perspective in a meaningful way, it can fit naturally into your personal essay or short responses, but it does not need to be forced in just to mention it.

Also pay attention to scholarships and support programs after you apply. For the application itself, think of first-gen status as something UConn considers as context, not as a separate admissions track.
