How does UConn's test optional policy work for applicants?

I'm applying to UConn and I'm trying to figure out what it means to apply test optional. I have an SAT score, but I'm not sure whether sending it would help or hurt my application.

I want to understand how the policy works so I can decide whether to include my scores or leave them out.

UConn allows first-year applicants to choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores, and applying without scores does not put you at a formal disadvantage in admission review. If you apply test optional, UConn will evaluate your application using the rest of your academic record, especially your transcript, course rigor, grades, and other required materials. If you do submit scores, UConn will consider them as one part of the review.

In practice, the most important factor is usually whether your SAT is solid for UConn relative to recently admitted students. A good rule of thumb is that if your score is around or above UConn’s middle 50 percent range for the campus or program you want, sending it can help support your application. If it is meaningfully below that range, leaving it out is often the better choice.

This matters even more for more selective programs within UConn, such as Nursing, Business, Engineering, or honors-related review, where stronger academic indicators can carry more weight. If your GPA, class rigor, and grades already present you well, a lower test score may add little. On the other hand, if your score is a clear strength, it can reinforce your readiness.

One important detail is that test optional is different from test blind. UConn will look at scores if you send them, so you should make the choice strategically rather than assuming the scores will be ignored. Also check whether any specific scholarship, honors, or special program requirements have their own testing rules for your application cycle, since those can sometimes differ from general admission.
