What should I do to make the most of an Oxford open day visit?

I’m planning to visit Oxford for an open day and I want to use the time well instead of just walking around and missing the useful stuff.

I’m mainly trying to figure out what I should prioritize during the visit so I can actually get a feel for the college, the course, and student life.

At Oxford, your academic experience is shaped by both the department and the college, so you need to see both sides. Open days usually include subject talks, college tours, admissions briefings, library access, and chances to ask tutors or student ambassadors questions, and those are much more useful than just wandering the city.

Start by booking or mapping out the course events first, since Oxford is especially course-focused and subject talks often give the clearest picture of teaching style, admissions expectations, and what the curriculum is actually like. If there is a department tour or lab session for your subject, prioritize that over a general presentation. Pay close attention to how tutors describe tutorials, workload, independent reading, and assessment, because that is the day-to-day reality of studying there.

Then use the rest of your time to compare colleges strategically, not randomly. Visit one college you already like, one that is less famous but realistic to consider, and if possible one with a different size, age, or location. Notice accommodation, distance to your department, library atmosphere, food hall, and whether the college feels busy, quiet, formal, or relaxed.

Ask current students specific questions rather than broad ones. Good questions include how often they actually have tutorials, how easy it is to get academic support, what the social life is like beyond traditions, whether they stay in college housing all years, and what surprised them after arriving. You will usually get better answers from students than from polished presentations.

Also sit in on an admissions talk if you can. Bring a short list of priorities and take notes right after each session, because the colleges can blur together by the end of the day.
