How do I apply to Oxford from the US as a high school student?

I’m a junior in the US and I’ve started looking into applying to Oxford, but the process seems very different from US colleges. I’m trying to understand the basic application path and what I need to prepare as an American student.

I’m mainly looking for the overall steps involved, since I want to make sure I’m not missing something important early on.

As a U.S. high school student, you apply to Oxford through UCAS, not the Common App, and the timeline is much earlier than most U.S. colleges. You also need to apply for a specific course up front, and many courses require an admissions test plus written work and interviews.

The basic path is: choose your Oxford course first, then check that course’s exact entry requirements for U.S. applicants. A general strong GPA alone is usually not enough because Oxford wants evidence that you are already excelling in the specific subject you plan to study.

Next, register for any required admissions test well before the UCAS deadline. Many Oxford courses require one. Some courses also ask for written work.

Your UCAS application includes one personal statement, but for Oxford it should be heavily academic. Focus on why you want to study that subject, what you have read or explored beyond class, and how you think about the field. Activities matter mainly if they support your academic interest in the course.

If shortlisted, you may be invited to interview. Oxford interviews are academic and discussion-based, more like a tutorial than a typical U.S. admissions interview.

The most important early steps for a current junior are choosing a course carefully, checking that course’s U.S. qualifications page, planning AP exams that match the subject, and watching the UCAS timeline.
