What are the best majors at Stony Brook for a career in business?
I’m looking at Stony Brook and trying to figure out which major would make the most sense if I want to work in business after college.
I know some schools have a dedicated business program and others steer students toward related majors, so I’m trying to understand which majors at Stony Brook are generally seen as the strongest choices for business careers.

At Stony Brook, the strongest direct option for a business career is the Business Management major in the College of Business. It is the school’s main undergraduate business degree and offers concentrations such as accounting, finance, marketing, operations, and management, which line up well with common business career paths. If you want the most straightforward preparation for corporate roles, internships, and recruiting in business fields, that is usually the best fit.
Other strong choices depend on the type of business work you want to do. Economics is a solid option for finance, consulting, analytics, and policy-related business roles, especially if you like quantitative thinking. Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, and Information Systems can also be excellent choices for careers in data analytics, fintech, operations, product, or business technology.
At Stony Brook specifically, Business Management is usually the most obvious answer because it gives you formal business coursework and access to the College of Business network. Economics tends to be especially useful if you may want graduate study later or if you are aiming for more analytical roles. Information Systems can be a smart middle ground if you are interested in business but want stronger technical skills that employers value.
If your goal is accounting, choose Business Management with the accounting focus and check CPA credit requirements early. If your goal is finance or consulting, Business Management or Economics are usually the best bets. If your goal is business analytics, operations, or tech-oriented business roles, majors like Information Systems, Applied Math and Statistics, or Computer Science may actually position you better than a general business degree.
