How is the University of San Diego’s academic reputation viewed by employers and graduate schools?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out whether USD is seen as a strong academic school beyond just being in a nice location. I like the campus and the programs seem solid, but I’m not sure how its reputation actually carries when it comes to jobs or grad school admissions.

I’m mostly trying to understand how people outside the school tend to view its academics.

USD is generally viewed as a solid, respected regional university, especially in California and the West Coast, and employers usually see it positively for business, nursing, engineering, and law-related paths. Its academic reputation is stronger than the “nice campus” stereotype suggests, but it is not typically treated like a nationally dominant research powerhouse. For graduate schools, USD students can do very well, and outcomes depend much more on grades, research, internships, and recommendations than on the school name alone.

Among employers, USD tends to have a good reputation for producing polished, professional graduates. Being in San Diego also helps with internships and recruiting in biotech, healthcare, finance, nonprofits, education, and defense-adjacent industries.

For graduate and professional schools, USD is respected as an academically serious institution, particularly because of its smaller class sizes and stronger faculty access compared with many large publics. That can help students build close relationships for recommendation letters and find leadership or research opportunities earlier. USD also has a well-known law school, and students aiming at medicine, law, public policy, or master’s programs can be competitive if they build a strong record.

Outside the West Coast, people may know the school a bit less well than major national-brand universities, so its name recognition is good but not universal. In practice, that usually matters less than students expect. A strong GPA, relevant experience, and a clear academic story from USD will usually carry more weight than whether every employer or admissions office instantly recognizes the name.
