How should I approach the University of San Diego essay prompts?

I'm a high school senior starting my college applications, and USD is one of the schools on my list. I want to make sure I understand what the essay prompts are really asking so I can answer them in a strong, focused way.

I’m especially trying to figure out how to organize my response without sounding too broad or generic.

Approach the University of San Diego essays by being specific, values-driven, and clearly tied to USD’s mission. USD is a Catholic university that emphasizes compassionate service, ethical leadership, inclusion, and global engagement, so the strongest responses show how your experiences and goals connect to those ideas in a concrete way. The biggest mistake is writing a broad personal statement-style essay that could be sent to any school.

Start by identifying exactly what the prompt is asking you to show: a value, a community contribution, an academic interest, or a reason for applying. Then build the essay around one main idea, not your whole life story. A good structure is simple: open with a specific moment or detail, explain what it reveals about you, and connect that insight to how you would contribute at USD.

If a prompt asks why USD, avoid generic lines about location, weather, or “strong academics.” Name real school-specific details such as the Changemaker Hub, undergraduate research, community-engaged learning, study abroad, or a program in your intended major. The key is not just listing opportunities, but explaining why those opportunities fit the kind of student and community member you already are.

If the prompt is more personal or values-based, choose a narrow example. One conversation, one project, one volunteer experience, or one challenge usually works better than a summary of many activities.

To keep the response from feeling generic, test every paragraph with this question: could this sentence go to ten other colleges? If yes, make it more specific. Replace broad claims like “I love helping people” with a vivid action, a lesson learned, and a forward-looking connection to campus life.

In terms of organization, think focus over coverage. One clear story with a strong takeaway is usually more effective than trying to mention everything. Your essay should leave the reader with a sharp sense of how you think, what you value, and why USD makes sense for you in particular.
