How should I approach the University of Delaware supplemental essay?

I'm working on my University of Delaware application and want to make sure my supplemental essay actually answers what they're looking for. I know these essays are supposed to show fit, but I'm not sure how specific I should get about the school without sounding generic.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to structure it and what kind of details usually make this kind of essay stronger.

For the University of Delaware supplemental essay, be specific enough that your answer could only fit Delaware, not any other school. The strongest responses usually connect one or two of your real interests to clear UD opportunities such as a particular major, undergraduate research, honors options, study abroad through the Institute for Global Studies, or community-based programs. A good structure is simple: name what you want to study or do, show where that interest comes from, then explain why Delaware is a strong match using concrete details.

Start with a focused academic or personal goal, not a broad statement like wanting a great education. If you are interested in engineering, business, health sciences, public policy, marine science, or another area with strong UD offerings, point to something real: a department, center, lab, course style, or program feature. The key is to explain not just what exists at UD, but why it matters to you.

What makes this kind of essay stronger is the connection piece. Instead of saying UD has great research opportunities, say that because you became interested in coastal resilience through a local volunteer project, you are drawn to UD’s strengths in environmental and marine-related work and want hands-on research early in college. That shows fit much better than listing facts.

Keep it selective. Two or three well-explained details are better than a long list of clubs, rankings, and campus features. You can also mention parts of student life if they genuinely support your goals, such as first-year engagement, internships, service, or the balance of a research university with a collaborative campus feel.

Avoid writing a mini travel brochure about Newark or repeating things already obvious from your transcript. Also avoid generic claims like strong academics, amazing professors, or endless opportunities unless you immediately make them specific. The essay should reveal something about how you think, what you care about, and how you would use Delaware’s resources in a deliberate way.

A useful test is this: if you replace University of Delaware with another college name and the essay still works, it is too generic.
