What should I do on a Louisiana State University campus visit to make the most of it?

I’m planning a visit to Louisiana State University and want to make sure I use the time well. I know a tour can only cover so much, and I’d rather focus on the most useful parts of the campus experience.

I’m mostly trying to figure out what to look for during the visit so I can get a better feel for the school.

To make the most of an LSU visit, focus less on the polished tour script and more on the places where you would actually spend time: your likely academic building, the Student Union, residence hall areas, and study spaces like Middleton Library. LSU’s campus is large and spread out, so one of the most useful things to assess is whether the layout feels manageable for your daily routine. It also helps to pay attention to Baton Rouge climate and walking distances, because heat and humidity can affect what day-to-day life feels like.

If possible, sit in on a class in your intended major or at least visit that department. At LSU, academic experience can vary a lot by college, so seeing where your classes, advising, labs, or studios are located will tell you more than the general campus tour. Try to speak with a current student in that major and ask how easy it is to get needed classes, connect with professors, and find internships or research.

Spend time in the LSU Student Union and nearby dining spots because that is where you can gauge student energy, not just campus appearance. Walk through at least one residence hall area even if you do not go inside, and check how close it feels to dining, classes, and recreation. If housing matters to you, ask specifically about first-year housing options and what students usually do after freshman year.

Also visit Middleton Library, the UREC, and any spaces tied to your interests, whether that is the Greek life area, arts venues, or athletic facilities. Since LSU has a strong campus culture around school spirit and SEC athletics, notice whether that atmosphere feels exciting, neutral, or overwhelming to you. That reaction matters more than people sometimes admit.

Before you leave, ask practical questions about transportation, parking, safety resources, and how often students go off campus into Baton Rouge.
