What is a typical 4-year course plan for a University of Hawaii biology major?

I’m a high school student trying to understand what a biology degree there would actually look like in college. I want to know how the major is usually mapped out over four years, including the general sequence of intro classes, labs, and upper-level biology courses.

I’m mainly trying to get a realistic sense of the workload and how the classes build on each other.

A typical 4-year biology plan at the University of Hawaii at Manoa starts with foundational math, chemistry, and introductory biology in the first two years, then shifts into genetics, cell and molecular biology, ecology or evolution, and advanced electives in the last two. By junior and senior year, the workload usually becomes more lab-heavy and reading-intensive because many upper-division BIOL courses build directly on those earlier chemistry and intro bio requirements.

A common first-year schedule includes general chemistry with lab, introductory biology with lab, calculus or statistics, and general education courses. The second year often includes the second intro biology course, organic chemistry, physics, and possibly microbiology or genetics if prerequisites are finished. This part of the degree can feel demanding because science majors often have multiple courses with separate lecture, discussion, and lab components in the same semester.

In the third year, many students move into core upper-division biology such as genetics, cell biology, ecology, evolution, physiology, or biochemistry. The exact mix depends on whether a student is leaning toward pre-health, marine biology, botany, zoology, or general biology electives, but the department usually expects students to complete a set of upper-division BIOL credits rather than follow one single rigid lockstep plan.

Senior year is often the most flexible. Students finish remaining upper-division electives, possible research or capstone-style work, and any leftover college or graduation requirements. Many biology majors also use this year for specialized classes like immunology, developmental biology, conservation biology, or marine-focused coursework if available.

Realistically, the workload is heaviest when chemistry, biology, and physics labs overlap. The course progression is very sequential, so starting chemistry and introductory biology on time matters a lot because delays there can push back upper-division BIOL classes. For the most accurate current plan, UH Manoa’s Biology BA or BS degree sheet and 4-year academic map are the best references, since exact course numbers and required supporting science courses can vary by catalog year.
