How does applying undecided to the University of Hawaii affect admissions chances?
I’m a high school junior/senior trying to figure out whether to apply to the University of Hawaii as undecided. I’m not fully sure what I want to major in yet, but I also don’t want that to make my application look weaker.
I’m mainly wondering how much being undecided matters in the admissions process compared with applying into a specific major.

At the University of Hawaiʻi, applying undecided usually does not hurt your overall admission chances very much. For most students, the bigger factors are your academic record, completed college-prep coursework, and whether the campus or program you want has separate requirements. Being undecided is generally fine if you truly are not sure yet.
The main exception is when you are comparing undecided with a selective or separately reviewed major. At UH Mānoa, some programs such as nursing, engineering, business, or other capacity-limited majors may have additional prerequisites or more competitive entry standards, so applying directly to one of those can be different from applying as undecided. In that situation, applying undecided may be easier for initial university admission, but it does not guarantee an easy path into the major later.
So the practical answer is this: applying undecided is usually not a red flag, but it can matter indirectly if your alternative is a competitive major with limited space. If you already know you want a restricted major and your profile is strong for it, applying directly can make sense. If you are genuinely unsure, undecided is a normal option, just make sure to check the specific major at the UH campus you plan to apply to so you understand whether switching in later is simple or competitive.
