How hard is it to transfer from a community college to the University of Hawaii?
I’m currently at a community college and thinking about transferring to the University of Hawaii for my bachelor’s degree. I’m trying to get a sense of how doable that path is for a student with a decent GPA and the usual general education classes.
I want to know whether this transfer route is considered straightforward or if there are common obstacles students run into.

Transferring from a community college to the University of Hawaii is generally very doable, especially if you mean UH Manoa, UH Hilo, or UH West Oahu and you have a solid college GPA with transferable general education coursework. In practice, the path is often fairly straightforward because the University of Hawaii system is used to receiving transfers, and Hawaii community colleges feed directly into the four-year campuses. The biggest issues are usually not getting admitted to the university itself, but making sure your credits apply correctly to your major and meeting any program-specific requirements.
If you are coming from a Hawaii community college, the process is usually smoother because the campuses are in the same system and many courses are designed to transfer cleanly. Students often have the easiest time when they complete lower-division requirements and track major prerequisites early. A decent GPA can be enough for general university admission, but more selective majors may expect stronger grades in certain classes.
Common obstacles include losing credits to electives instead of major requirements, missing prerequisite sequences, and applying too late for housing, financial aid, or limited-capacity programs. For example, a student may transfer with enough credits to be admitted but still need extra semesters because they did not finish the right math or science courses for their intended major. That is why checking articulation and degree maps matters as much as GPA.
If you are transferring from a mainland community college, it can still be very possible, but course evaluation may take more effort. In that case, compare your classes carefully with UH requirements and pay close attention to residency rules, deadlines, and whether your intended major has separate admission standards.
