How should I approach standardized testing for University of Hawaii admissions?
I’m a junior starting to build my college list, and the University of Hawaii is one of the schools I’m considering. I’m trying to figure out how much standardized test scores matter in the admissions process and how I should think about them when planning my application.
I already have a rough idea of my academics, but I want to understand the role testing plays before I decide how much effort to put into it.

For the University of Hawaiʻi, standardized tests usually are not the main factor you should build your application around. UH campuses generally place much more weight on your high school coursework and GPA, and several campuses have used test-optional or limited-use policies in recent admission cycles. In practice, that means strong grades in solid classes matter more than chasing a small SAT or ACT increase.
The most important step is to check the exact campus you plan to apply to, because admissions policies can differ across the UH system.
A practical approach is to treat testing as a secondary piece of the application. If you can earn a strong SAT or ACT score without taking time away from grades, activities, or essays, it can still be useful, especially for merit scholarship consideration or placement purposes. But if test prep starts competing with maintaining a strong GPA, finishing rigorous junior-year classes well, or building the rest of your application, I would prioritize academics first.
For planning purposes, look up three things on each UH campus admissions page: whether tests are required, whether scores are considered for scholarships, and whether they affect placement after enrollment.
