Does the University of Hawaii offer financial aid for out-of-state students?

I’m looking at the University of Hawaii and I’m from out of state, so cost is a big concern for me.

I know some schools give extra aid only to residents, so I’m trying to figure out whether out-of-state students can still get financial aid there.

Yes. The University of Hawaii does offer financial aid to out-of-state students, including federal aid, some institutional scholarships, and in many cases merit-based awards that are not limited to Hawaii residents. If you are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, you can submit the FAFSA and be considered for federal grants, loans, and work-study regardless of your home state.

At UH campuses such as UH Manoa, out-of-state students can also be considered for scholarships through the university, though need-based institutional aid is often more limited than federal aid and total costs can still be significantly higher for nonresidents. In practice, that means out-of-state students usually can get aid, but not always enough to bring the price close to in-state tuition.

The best way to think about it is that out-of-state students are eligible for aid, but they should check three separate categories: FAFSA-based federal aid, campus-specific scholarships, and any tuition discount programs or residency-related policies. For cost planning, look closely at the university’s net price calculator and the scholarship pages for the specific UH campus you mean, since UH Manoa, UH Hilo, and other campuses may differ.
