What are the strongest undergraduate programs at the University of Hawaii?

I’m thinking about applying to the University of Hawaii and trying to understand what it’s really known for academically. I want to focus on majors where the school has a particularly strong reputation for undergrads, not just what sounds popular on paper.

I’m mainly trying to get a sense of which programs stand out the most overall.

At the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, the strongest undergraduate programs are generally marine biology and ocean-related sciences, environmental science, astronomy, Hawaiian and Pacific Islands studies, and Asian studies. Those areas stand out because the campus’s location in the Pacific directly shapes its research strengths, field access, and faculty expertise. UH Manoa is also well regarded for nursing, engineering, and travel industry management, especially when students want a program tied closely to Hawai‘i’s economy and environment.

Marine biology and oceanography are among the clearest signature strengths. The school’s island location gives undergrads unusual access to coral reefs, coastal ecosystems, and marine research opportunities that many mainland universities cannot match. If someone wants hands-on work in marine ecosystems, climate, conservation, or fisheries, UH is one of the more distinctive options.

Hawaiian studies and Pacific Islands studies are also standout programs in a way that is hard to replicate elsewhere. UH Manoa has deep academic resources in Indigenous Hawaiian language, culture, history, and Pacific regional studies.

Astronomy is another notable area because Hawai‘i is a major global center for observational astronomy. Undergraduates benefit from proximity to major observatories and a strong overall science environment connected to space and atmospheric research.

Asian studies is especially strong too, partly because of Hawai‘i’s geographic and cultural position between the U.S. and Asia. The university has long-established strengths in East Asian languages, politics, history, and regional studies.

For more career-oriented options, nursing has a solid reputation, engineering is respected with particular relevance to civil, environmental, and ocean-related work, and the Shidler College of Business is best known at the undergraduate level for travel industry management and international business.
