What should I ask during a University of Hawaii campus tour?

I’m planning to tour the University of Hawaii soon and want to make the most of it instead of just walking around and leaving. Since I’m a junior trying to figure out where I might actually want to apply, I want to know what kinds of questions would help me understand the campus better.

I’m mostly trying to get a feel for the academics, student life, and what daily life there is really like.

Ask questions that reveal what daily life is actually like at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, not just facts you can find online. The most useful topics are class access, campus culture, housing, advising, and how students use Honolulu as part of their experience. UH Manoa is a large public research university in Honolulu, so your experience can vary a lot by major, whether you live on campus, and how comfortable you are with a busy urban setting.

For academics, ask how easy it is for first-year students to get the classes they need, especially in your possible major. Ask what intro classes are usually like, whether professors or TAs teach them, how accessible office hours are, and how academic advising works when students want to change majors or explore options.

For student life, ask what students actually do on weekdays and weekends, not just what clubs exist. Ask whether campus feels active after class, how many students commute, what traditions or events students genuinely care about, and whether it is easy to make friends if you are coming from out of state or a different island.

For housing and daily life, ask about the biggest differences between living on campus and off campus in Honolulu. It is smart to ask about dorm culture, meal plan quality, transportation without a car, safety at night, and whether students usually stay on campus or leave throughout the day.

A few especially useful questions are: What do students wish they knew before enrolling? What kinds of students tend to thrive here? What is one thing people misunderstand about UH Manoa? If you are considering a specific field, also ask what internships, research, or local partnerships students commonly get, since location matters a lot there.

During the tour, pay attention to what you see as much as what you hear. Look at whether students seem to be using common spaces, whether buildings in your areas of interest look active and supported, and whether the campus feels like somewhere you would want to spend an ordinary Tuesday, not just a visit day.
