How important is the essay for University of New Hampshire business major applicants?
I’m a junior interested in applying to the University of New Hampshire as a business major, and I’m trying to understand how much weight the application essay usually carries. My grades and activities are solid, but I want to know whether the essay is something that can really help a business applicant stand out.
I’m mainly asking because I’m deciding how much time to put into it compared with the rest of my application.

The essay matters at the University of New Hampshire, but it is usually not the single biggest factor for a business applicant. UNH admissions puts primary weight on your high school transcript, the rigor of your courses, and your overall academic record, and for the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics they will especially want to see that you can handle college-level work. The essay is most helpful as a differentiator when many applicants have similar grades and activities, or when you want to add context that the rest of the application does not show.
So yes, it can absolutely help you stand out, but mostly by strengthening an already solid application rather than overriding weak academics. For a student with strong grades, a thoughtful essay can make you look more mature, more self-aware, and more clearly aligned with business-related goals. It can also help admissions understand your motivation, communication skills, and what you would contribute on campus.
A strong approach is to make sure the essay is polished, specific, and personal rather than trying to sound overly formal or “businesslike.” If you are applying as a business major, it helps if your essay indirectly shows traits that fit that path, such as initiative, problem-solving, collaboration, judgment, or curiosity about organizations and people.
In practical terms, the essay is worth serious effort, but probably after academics and core application quality are in good shape. If your transcript and activities are already solid, a strong essay can definitely improve how memorable your application feels.
