What is the best strategy for qualifying for Texas Tech merit scholarships as a high school senior?

I’m a high school senior looking at Texas Tech and trying to figure out how merit scholarships usually work there. My grades and test scores are solid, but I’m not sure what parts of my application matter most for being considered.

I’m mainly trying to understand the best strategy for improving my chances of getting merit aid before I apply.

For Texas Tech, the best strategy is to apply early, submit strong test scores if they help you, and make sure your academic record is as competitive as possible by the time you apply. Texas Tech’s main freshman merit awards are driven heavily by measurable academics, especially GPA/class rank and sometimes SAT or ACT scores, rather than essays or extracurriculars carrying the process.

As a senior, that means sending updated transcripts promptly, confirming whether your class rank is reported, and making sure your highest available test score is on file if it strengthens your profile.

If your SAT or ACT is above Texas Tech’s typical admitted-student range, submit it. If your score is only average relative to your GPA, test-optional may be the better choice depending on the current policy for your cycle, but for merit money, a strong score often helps more than it hurts. A higher score can make a real difference because Texas Tech merit review tends to reward clear academic indicators.

Also pay attention to your core academic strength, not just your overall GPA. Strong performance in rigorous courses, especially core college-prep classes, supports scholarship competitiveness. If your school weights GPA heavily, make sure Texas Tech receives the full transcript context so your rigor is visible.

Finally, look beyond the university-wide awards. Apply for your academic college’s scholarships, departmental scholarships, and any honors-related funding if you are eligible for the Honors College.
