What are the best tips for a University of Oregon admissions interview?

I’m getting ready for a University of Oregon admissions interview and want to make a good impression without sounding overly rehearsed.

I know interviews are usually more about showing interest and being myself, but I’m not sure what kind of answers or preparation help most for this school.

For a University of Oregon admissions interview, the best approach is to sound thoughtful, curious, and specific about why Oregon fits you. The strongest interviews usually feel like a conversation where the student can explain what they care about, why they want Oregon, and how they would contribute on campus.

Prepare a clear answer to a few basics: why University of Oregon, what academic interests you want to explore, what you do outside class, and what matters to you in a college community. Keep your answers concrete. Instead of saying you want a school with school spirit and good academics, mention something specific such as undergraduate research, the student media scene, sustainability culture, study abroad, or the balance between a lively campus and outdoor access in Eugene.

It also helps to show that you understand Oregon as more than athletics. School spirit is real there, but interviewers will usually be more impressed if you can talk about academic opportunities, campus culture, and what you would actually do as a student. A good answer sounds like, “I’m drawn to Oregon because I want a collaborative campus where I can study environmental policy and also be involved in sustainability initiatives,” not just “I love the Ducks.”

Practice enough that you sound comfortable, not scripted. Have a few stories ready that show initiative, curiosity, leadership, resilience, or community involvement, but do not try to force them into every answer. Interviewers generally remember students who seem present, friendly, and genuinely reflective.

Bring smart questions of your own. Ask about first-year opportunities, how students get involved in research or internships, or what kinds of students thrive at UO. That shows interest and maturity much better than trying to give perfect answers.
