Should I send an update letter after getting waitlisted?

I just got waitlisted and I’m trying to figure out whether sending an update letter is actually helpful or if it just makes me look repetitive. Since the decision is already made, I’m not sure what kind of information is worth sharing.

I have a few newer achievements and a strong grade update, but I only want to send something if it could realistically matter.

Yes, sending an update letter after being waitlisted is usually worthwhile if you have real new information to share. A strong grade update, meaningful new achievements, and a clear statement that you would seriously consider attending can all help, especially because waitlist decisions are often made with the most current information available. What matters is that the letter adds something new rather than repeating your original application.

The best update letter is short, specific, and purposeful. Include your recent grades if they are stronger than what the school previously saw, any notable awards, leadership roles, projects, publications, performances, or major extracurricular developments, and one or two concrete reasons the college is still a strong fit for you. If the school allows continued interest statements, it is also smart to say directly whether you would enroll if admitted, but only if that is true.

What usually does not help is sending a long emotional letter, restating your whole application, or adding minor updates that do not change the picture much. Admissions offices are reading quickly, so a concise one-page letter tends to work better than something detailed and repetitive.

Before sending anything, check the college’s waitlist instructions carefully. Some schools explicitly invite updates, some only want a form, and some say not to send extra materials. If they do allow it, one strong update letter is generally better than multiple messages unless you later receive a truly major new accomplishment.
