How does pre-law advising work at Texas Tech University?

I’m a high school senior interested in Texas Tech and I want to understand how their pre-law advising is set up. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s a formal program, a specific advisor, or just general academic advising for students who want to go to law school.

I’m mostly looking for how a student would start getting guidance there and what kind of support pre-law students usually get.

Students who want to go to law school can use the university’s PreLaw Program, which is housed in University Advising, and they can meet with a designated pre-law advisor for guidance on law school preparation. Texas Tech also has its own School of Law in Lubbock, which tends to create more law-related programming, events, and campus connections than you might find at schools without a law school.

A student usually starts by contacting the PreLaw Program through University Advising and setting up an appointment. You do not need to be a specific major to be pre-law at Texas Tech, since pre-law is generally considered a professional track rather than a standalone major. Students typically keep their academic major in a field like political science, history, English, business, or something else they enjoy, while using pre-law advising alongside that major.

The support usually includes help choosing courses that build strong reading, writing, and analytical skills, planning a timeline for law school applications, discussing internships or campus involvement, and preparing for the LSAT and application process. Pre-law advising can also help students think through whether law school is the right fit, how to build a competitive resume, and how to seek out recommendation letters and legal exposure.

Texas Tech pre-law students may also have access to events such as law school panels, admissions workshops, and programming connected to the TTU School of Law.
