What is a good strategy for writing a Bard supplemental essay?

I’m working on my college applications and Bard is one of the schools on my list. The supplemental essay seems like one of the main places to show fit, but I’m not sure what kind of response actually works well for Bard.

I want to make sure my essay feels specific and thoughtful without sounding forced or overly formal.

A strong Bard supplemental essay should feel intellectually curious, specific, and a little fearless. Bard tends to value students who genuinely like ideas, discussion, and creative academic exploration, so the best response usually shows how you think, not just what you have achieved. The essay works best when it sounds like a real person engaging seriously with a question, text, or interest rather than trying to sound polished for its own sake.

Start by identifying one or two parts of Bard that actually connect to you. That might be the Open Curriculum, the language around critical inquiry, the senior project, the first-year seminar, or a particular academic or artistic program. Then build the essay around a clear link between that feature and the way you already learn, make, question, or participate in ideas.

What usually works well for Bard is a response grounded in a specific intellectual habit. For example, instead of saying you love interdisciplinary learning, describe a moment when you connected philosophy to music, environmental science to local activism, or literature to translation. Bard is the kind of school where showing your way of thinking is more persuasive than listing credentials.

Keep the tone thoughtful but not stiff. Bard is not looking for corporate polish. An essay that takes a real risk, follows an unusual line of thought, or reflects honestly on uncertainty can be more effective than one that sounds conventionally impressive.

A useful structure is simple: begin with a concrete question, moment, or idea that matters to you, show how you engaged with it, and then connect that naturally to what you would do at Bard. The key is that the Bard connection should feel earned. Avoid dropping in program names at the end without showing why they matter to your way of thinking.

Also, be careful not to make the essay too broad or abstract. If you write about wanting to change the world, love learning, or value open-mindedness, anchor those claims in one vivid example. Bard essays tend to stand out when they are precise, intellectually alive, and slightly distinctive in voice.
