How do I apply to University of California schools as an out-of-state student?
I’m a high school junior and I’m looking into UC schools, but I don’t live in California. I’m trying to understand what the basic application process looks like for out-of-state students and whether there are any parts of the application that are different for someone applying from another state.

You apply to University of California campuses through the same UC application used by California residents. Out-of-state students submit one application at apply.universityofcalifornia.edu, can choose multiple UC campuses in that application, and apply during the filing period from October 1 to November 30 for fall admission. The main differences for nonresidents are cost, residency classification, and sometimes how courses are reviewed because your high school is outside California.
The application itself includes your academic history, activities and awards, and four Personal Insight Questions. UC does not require letters of recommendation at the time you apply, and test scores are not used for admission decisions. You will self-report your grades and courses first, then send official records later if you enroll.
As an out-of-state applicant, you still need to meet UC’s college-preparatory course pattern, often called the a-g requirements. Because your school may not use California course labels, you should match your classes carefully to the UC subject areas using UC’s freshman admission guidance for non-California students. UC will review whether your courses are equivalent.
You should also know that out-of-state students are generally evaluated in the nonresident pool and must show strong academics to be competitive at many UC campuses. If admitted, paying nonresident tuition does not by itself make you a California resident later for tuition purposes, and financial aid for nonresidents is usually limited compared with what California residents can receive.
In practical terms, your steps are: build your college list, confirm your courses meet UC requirements, complete the UC application in the fall of senior year, submit it by November 30, and then watch each campus portal for any additional requests. Some campuses may invite or require supplemental information after submission, but that is campus-specific, not a separate out-of-state application.
