What should I highlight in my UC Berkeley application if I want to apply for a business-related major?

I’m a high school junior trying to plan ahead for UC Berkeley and I’m interested in business. I know Berkeley doesn’t have a traditional undergraduate business major, so I’m trying to figure out what kind of activities, classes, or experiences would make the strongest application for a business-related path there.

I want to make sure I’m focusing on the right things now instead of building a profile that doesn’t fit what Berkeley looks for.

For UC Berkeley, the strongest application for a business-related path should highlight academic rigor, quantitative strength, leadership, and real evidence that you understand organizations, markets, or problem-solving beyond just saying you like business. Berkeley’s business pathway is most closely tied to the Haas School of Business, and many students apply first to the College of Letters and Science, so your profile should show you can thrive academically while also taking initiative in business-adjacent settings. In practice, that usually means strong grades in challenging courses, meaningful leadership, and activities with clear impact rather than a long list of business clubs.

Academically, prioritize rigorous classes, especially math, economics if available, statistics, data science, computer science, and strong writing-based courses. Berkeley values intellectual curiosity, so it helps if your coursework shows both quantitative ability and communication skills, since business at Berkeley is not just finance or entrepreneurship but also analysis, strategy, and leadership. Strong performance in AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Economics, or similar courses can fit well if your school offers them.

For activities, focus on depth and results. Good examples include leading a club budget, starting a small venture, managing fundraising with measurable outcomes, working a part-time job and learning about operations or customer behavior, doing market research for a community project, or taking on a leadership role where you improved a process. DECA, FBLA, investment club, student government, nonprofit finance work, or entrepreneurial projects can all help, but they matter most when you can show initiative, growth, and impact.

Berkeley also responds well to applicants who connect business interests to broader values. If your interest is in sustainability, public policy, technology, social impact, or community economic development, that can be especially compelling because it fits Berkeley’s culture. In your PIQs, the strongest angle is usually a specific story showing how you noticed a problem, organized people, analyzed options, and created change.

So the best profile is a record of strong academics, quantitative preparation, leadership with real outcomes, and thoughtful interest in how organizations create value for people and communities.
