How can I demonstrate interest in UPenn in a genuine way?

I’m applying to Penn and I keep hearing that colleges notice demonstrated interest. I want to make sure I’m showing interest in a way that actually feels authentic, not like I’m just checking a box.

I’m mostly wondering what kinds of actions or communication are considered meaningful for showing real interest in Penn.

For Penn, the most meaningful way to show genuine interest is not through lots of emails or superficial outreach, but through specific engagement you can later reflect in your application. What matters more is whether your application clearly shows that you understand Penn’s academic structure, culture, and opportunities, especially in the Why Penn essay.

The strongest signals are actions that help you build school-specific knowledge. Attend Penn information sessions, virtual events, or school-specific programs for the college or undergraduate school you are applying to, such as Wharton, Engineering, Nursing, or the College of Arts and Sciences. Read beyond the homepage by exploring departments, research centers, interdisciplinary programs, and things like the One University policy, which is a distinctive part of Penn’s academic model.

If you contact Penn, make it purposeful. Asking a thoughtful question that is not easily answered on the website can be worthwhile, but repeated emails or generic enthusiasm usually do not add much. A better use of time is talking to current students or alumni, then using what you learned to explain why Penn fits how you want to study, collaborate, or explore across schools.

In practice, authentic interest looks like specificity. Instead of saying Penn has great academics, you might be able to point to a particular program, lab, course cluster, civic engagement opportunity in Philadelphia, or cross-school combination that matches your goals. That comes across as real interest because it shows you have done the work to understand Penn as Penn, not just as a highly ranked university.
