What are the best majors at UC San Diego for students interested in STEM and research?

I’m trying to figure out which UC San Diego majors are strongest overall, especially for someone who wants a good mix of academics, research, and career options. I know UCSD is known for STEM, but I’m not sure which majors are considered the most respected or best supported there.

I’m mainly looking for a major that has a strong reputation and good opportunities on campus.

At UC San Diego, the strongest majors for STEM students interested in research are usually Computer Science, Bioengineering, Biology and Biochemistry, Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mathematics. UC San Diego is especially well known for research access because it is a top-tier R1 university and sits next to institutes like Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the School of Medicine. If you want a major with both academic prestige and strong career outcomes, those are the clearest standouts.

Computer Science is one of the most respected and competitive options at UCSD, with lots of research in AI, systems, theory, and machine learning through the Jacobs School of Engineering. Data Science has also become a very strong choice because UCSD has a dedicated Halicioglu Data Science Institute.

For life sciences, UCSD is especially strong in Molecular and Cell Biology, Human Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioengineering. The campus has exceptional research depth because of its medical school and close ties to San Diego’s biotech sector, so these majors offer a lot of lab opportunities and good preparation for grad school, medicine, and biotech careers.

Engineering more broadly is a major strength. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering are all well supported, though bioengineering often stands out most because UCSD has a particularly strong reputation in that area.

If your main goal is research, Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Physics, Math, and CS are all excellent because undergraduates can get involved in faculty labs relatively early. If your goal is the best mix of prestige, research access, and career flexibility, the safest bets are Computer Science, Bioengineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.

One practical thing to keep in mind is that some of UCSD’s most popular STEM majors are capped, meaning admission into the major can be very competitive.
