What should I focus on in a University of Washington engineering essay?

I’m applying to engineering and want my essay to actually show fit for the program instead of just repeating my activities list.

I’ve done robotics and some math and coding projects, but I’m not sure what kind of experiences or qualities the essay should emphasize for a strong University of Washington engineering application.

Focus on showing how you think and build, not just listing robotics, coding, or math activities again. For University of Washington engineering, the strongest essay usually makes clear how you solve problems, work with other people, and engage with engineering in ways that have real purpose.

A good direction is to center the essay on one or two specific moments where you designed, tested, failed, adjusted, or improved something. That could be a robotics setback, a coding project that forced you to rethink your approach, or a math-based challenge where the interesting part was how you handled uncertainty. The key is to show your process: what problem you noticed, why it mattered to you, what you tried, what changed, and what you learned about engineering from it.

It also helps to show intellectual maturity. Instead of saying robotics taught you leadership and perseverance, describe a concrete decision you made, such as simplifying a design to improve reliability, changing your code after testing exposed a flaw, or listening to a teammate’s idea that changed the project outcome. That kind of detail makes your fit feel earned.

I would avoid spending much space explaining why UW is highly ranked or naming lots of labs or courses. If you mention UW at all, keep it brief and relevant, such as wanting an environment where collaborative engineering and real-world application matter. The essay should still be mostly about you, your habits of mind, and the kind of engineer you are becoming.
