How hard is it to get into the University of Washington as an out-of-state applicant?

I’m a junior trying to figure out what colleges to put on my list, and UW is one I’m interested in. I live outside Washington, so I know the process may be different for out-of-state students.

I’m mostly trying to understand how selective it is for nonresidents compared with in-state applicants.

It is meaningfully harder to get into the University of Washington as an out-of-state applicant than as a Washington resident, especially for popular majors. UW Seattle is selective overall, and nonresident applicants face a smaller share of available spots because the university gives priority to serving Washington students.

For freshman admission to UW Seattle, residency does matter. Washington residents generally have an advantage in the review process, and out-of-state students are competing for a more limited portion of the class. The challenge rises further if you want direct admission to majors like computer science, engineering, business, or nursing, since those programs are often much more selective than general university admission.

Another important detail is that UW admits students to the university first, but not everyone gets directly into their intended major. For some majors, especially the most in-demand ones, getting into UW does not guarantee later access to that program. That means an out-of-state applicant should think not just about admission to UW Seattle, but about how realistic their intended major is.

As a practical way to classify it on a college list, UW Seattle is usually not a safety for out-of-state students and is often closer to a target or reach, depending on grades, course rigor, and intended major.
