What should I avoid in UVA essays?

Avoid answers that could be sent to any college with just the name swapped in. UVA’s supplementals work best when they sound specific, self-aware, and tied to how you actually think, not like a polished summary of your résumé.

A common mistake is restating activities already listed elsewhere instead of adding a new angle. If you write about debate, research, student government, or volunteering, the essay should reveal something not obvious from the activity description, such as a contradiction, a small turning point, or the way your perspective changed.

Also avoid overexplaining why UVA is “prestigious” or “top-ranked.” If a prompt invites you to connect with the university, mention details that are actually distinctive and relevant, like the student-run culture, the Honor system, Jeffersonian traditions, the emphasis on discussion and collaboration, or a program and community that fit your interests. The key is not name-dropping facts, but showing why those details matter to you specifically.

Another thing that weakens UVA essays is being too broad. Topics like “my immigrant family taught me hard work” or “sports taught me perseverance” are not automatically bad, but they often stay generic unless you narrow them to one vivid, personal moment. A smaller, more precise story usually feels more sincere than a sweeping life lesson.

Finally, avoid trying to sound overly formal, quirky for the sake of quirky, or morally perfect. UVA’s shorter responses often reward voice, but that voice should still feel natural.
