Should I apply early to Yale if it's my top choice?

Apply early to Yale only if your application will be fully ready by the Single-Choice Early Action deadline and Yale is clearly your top choice. Yale does offer an early option, but it is not an ED program, and the admissions office has repeatedly indicated that there is no built-in admissions boost just for applying early. The early pool can look stronger because it includes many especially prepared applicants, recruited athletes, and other hooked candidates.

For Yale specifically, Single-Choice Early Action is most worth it when your grades through junior year, testing if you are submitting, activities, and essays are already strong by November. If your application would be noticeably better with first-semester senior grades, improved testing, or more polished essays, Regular Decision can be the smarter choice. A rushed early application usually is not worth it for a school this selective.

One practical advantage of applying early is that you get your decision sooner, and if you are deferred, Yale will reconsider your application in the regular round. But the main reason to apply early should be that your application is already at its best, not that you expect a meaningful edge simply from the timing.
